ALLISON ALL-IN-ONE

ALLISON ALL-IN-ONE

Roger A. Davis

Allison: So much wrapped up in one so young

A caring sister, gymnast, cheerleader and student
No one can stuff Allie in any drab compartment
A free spirit who loves Sloppy Joes
Allison has more ability than others in just one of her balancing toes

Allison told me that Texas Hold’em was a drinking game
Readers, imagine Allison and roommate going all-in
In that game, does anyone win?
Kiddo, to me your compassionate ways have cleaned us out
Here’s hoping you will always know that you are cool - and that, never doubt!

Therefore, cheer us on in your black clad pants
But give us a break, you white witch
Turn off that magic trance switch
But not for long
For all in the world need your young girl song

BREANNA-KELSEY TWINS

BREANNA – KELSEY TWINS

Roger A. Davis

Saw them today in a new light
I could see Breanna only on my right
No frontal view, but like a cameo brooch
Then, when I saw Kelsey as she approached
It dawned on me
Twins!

Kelsey was visiting as she worked her job
Wow, she must be a tennis player; she sure can lob
Hy-Vee twins – do you have any more?
They only show their good side, and that times four

Hey, they are a double-headed coin
Kelsey’s and Breanna’s faces are beautifully minted
Hy-Vee, you and they are lucky winners
Solid gold not dinted

I come to this store more than I should
To see your fine collection
Kelsey and Breanna are drawing cards
Because of their courteous attitudes and affection

BRANDON: TO THE FARM AGAIN

BRANDON: TO THE FARM AGAIN

Roger A. Davis

A man too soon
Being visited with pain
The arthritic cocoon
Our prayer: It will not sustain

For Brandon soon, someday
Will metaphorically need to bale hay
Riding the Kubota and the John Deere mower
Helping commerce like a brand new Black & Decker leaf blower
His kindness has already blown this old man away
And, in only moments, others will feel his loving sway

Of one sister, Kaitlyn, who will be twenty soon
The affliction in Brandon’s voice
Tells us, for this big brother, she is his passionate choice
She shines like the stars and the moon
I count it a blessing to advance and grow in our friendship
On this planet, God’s Spaceship

CHARITY STARTS AT HOME

CHARITY STARTS AT HOME

Charity starts very early each day at Hy-Vee
Her Kingdom: The great smelling Bakery
Roger is her cookie slave!
There’s a basket with free cookies paved

When approaching the cake display
Every child, like me, intensely wonders, ‘What are the choices today?’
This much we know – Charity and staff
Will fill the basket with goodies that make our stomach laugh

I have a Lawrence Mom, and Charity plays the part

The saying, ‘Charity starts at home,’ is true
400 miles from my real mom in Pratt
Yet, one of Charity’s chats
Makes us glad, not blue

She has my back, too
Guards me from insults, whether false or true
She says, ‘You know, you need Christmas lights on your sleigh. Ho-ho-ho”
Her kids and I know it is true
A mom who is always looking out for you

CLOTHES CHEST

CLOTHES CHEST

Roger A. Davis

Mother of Pearl and sailing dhows
Asian utility furniture looks cool, wow
Reflects the night light
And for me, helps not to be scared of the night

I store afghans and blankets to snuggle
But I wonder and dream
Maybe it stored a war lord’s treasure
That he gained in life’s struggle

DEBI & JESSICA

DEBI & JESSICA

Roger A. Davis

14 days of IVs
Debi and Jessica I must see
Jess has little ones
Debi has a college lass and a high school son

I suppose they will soon grow tired of me
For I have an abnormal habit of wanting their stories and family tree
My two grandmas were genealogists
Now I’m a history-seeing old cuss

EVA: REFLECTS A LOVELY LADY

EVA: REFLECTS A LOVELY LADY

Eva (Eve) was a great blessing today
She is more than First Southern Baptist Church’s secretary in many a way
Mrs. Eva lovingly fears the Heavenly Father
It is to her praise, this Godly woman, I write with an angel wing with #2 lead
As always, not me but by His Glory until we all join the Saints in Jesus
Thank you for being a friend so quick
God bless you, Eva, with bites of manna ever so thick

With thanks to the First Southern Baptist Church
May grace and the knowledge of Jesus
Fill this place in heavenly new ways

Hope to see you on Sunday

JACKIE OH!

JACKIE OH!

Roger A. Davis

I think of JFK and, later, Jackie O his wife and her tragic life
A world gone mad with strife
Now days, my world is Canyon Court
And this is my good report

Our property manager is named Jackie
And she is no longer a Rookie
If this was a school instead and you were the teacher, Jackie
I would never play hooky

Kid, you got us through summer, fall, a terrible winter, and now it’s almost spring
Jackie, getting the hot tub going has given me just the right thing
I know my temper has flared a few times and always I feel grief
Going back to A101, I pray that you will find solace and relief

You seem to never get bitter nor judge this old man
It has made me your number one fan
Yet, I’m not alone –my neighbors have commented on how much they like you and Mike, too
I hope you believe this because it’s really true

I’m such a kidder, you know, dear
But from the bottom of my hearth, I’m sincere

JUSTIN: SUNFLOWER REPAIR TECH

JUSTIN: SUNFLOWER REPAIR TECH

Roger A. Davis

Justin, Tech
Fix the box, what the heck!
He likes his two year reign
His wife says it keep her and him sane

Pet lover: Has a dog named Judah, a Lab and Akita mix
God, I hope Justin gets my HD forever fixed
Justin, you look like a brilliant professor on Oread Hill
Sure hope your work this time fills the bill

PATTIE: LIBRARIAN EXTRAORDINAIRE

PATTIE: LIBRARIAN EXTRAORDINAIRE

Roger A. Davis

To Pattie, my Personal Librarian

An angel came to Canyon Court one March day
Shortly after another snowy, drifty play day
Pattie – her Virginian angel name
An accent so cool, I still hear the refrain
But most of all, Pattie brought me a past love
The world of the Spirit in the form of a dove
This metaphor is the Spoken and Written Word
I know you, also, have ears to hear and eyes to see
Pattie, you’re a missionary to the home bound, don’t you agree?
Books, tapes and, do not forget, visits are the key
You’re God’s servant serving His people
And He could not be more proud of thee

SKYE BLUE WATER

SKYE BLUE WATER

Roger A. Davis

There are green pastures and still waters that I find at Hy-Vee
The fairy princess who greets us early-risers is Skye, daily
We get a daughter’s smile that says, “Rise and Shine”
Plus, in that greeting, “Enjoy hot coffee,” and, “I hope breakfast is divine”

Roger, stumbling block fool
Gets extra service because he is a tangled fishing line spool
How Skye puts up is beyond thank yous
For this old man can’t help his abuse

Yet her compassionate hurt eyes calm the raging beast
And a calmness of still waters gives Roger relief
Thank you, Skye, for your kindness – not just to me but to everybody
Patrons, suppliers and employees
